1947 Gibson L-5, Sunburst

A truly stunning 1947 Gibson L-5, representing the pinnacle of Gibson’s post-war archtop craftsmanship. As the company’s flagship model, the L-5 was built to exacting standards—and this example shows exactly why it remains one of the most revered jazz guitars ever made.
This guitar features the classy script headstock logo and elegant torch, inlayed on the 5-ply bound headstock. The original Kluson Sealfast tuners are intact and functioning well and the sunburst flame maple neck is exceptional—elegant, figured, and well preserved showing minor signs of play wear. The bound ebony fingerboard is inlaid with classic block markers, the carved spruce top is tight-grained, with bound f-holes and a rich sunburst finish that’s mellowed and faded a little with time showing a very nice warm amber/maroon hue. The sunburst flamed maple back and sides are equally striking, with dramatic figuring. The original gold-plated L-5 tailpiece with silver insert is present and gleaming, rounding off the guitar’s luxurious appointments.
Tonally the 'advanced' 17" body can really project and cut through a live band; the percussive nature and attack being what these are famous for, but with a warm tonal depth and balance that defines these models.
The original tortoiseshell pickguard has come off its mounting bracket but is safely retained in the case and included in the sale.
This is an excellent example and an excellent piece of Gibson history. A flagship model in every sense, with tone and looks to match its legacy.
